Day 7-9: Goodbyes to Wanaka and Hello Australia

Day 7: Last day in Wanaka

We spent the rainy day walking around town, enjoying our last day with these beautiful lake/Mountain Views. 



Then, we went to a movie. Why would someone go to a movie in a faraway land, when they can go anytime? Because Wanaka had two cute one of a kind theaters, that needed to be checked out. It appears they started the trend of comfy couches and food while you eat, Harkins and the rest of them must have just stole the idea. 

We finished the day at the best restaurant in New Zealand, so the rumor goes. We chose the “Feed me” option, so the chef just sent whatever he wanted to our table. It was so fun!


Days 8 and 9: Malia’s Birthday from the future

We made it to Sydney, Australia. Took a standard opera house selfie, checked out some food and a walking tour about their convict history. 


We happened to be in Sydney, the first day of the 10th anniversary of the Vivid festival. Lights all over town. It was pretty cool. 


We woke up to a beautiful day in Sydney and decided to check out the opera house a little closer up. 


We walked through the Royal Botanical Gardens. 


One more flight and we made it to Cairns. I enjoyed some birthday oysters. It was a great Australian Birthday. But this year, I’m so lucky my birthday lasts two days!  Since I’m in the future, I guess I’ll just spend my American birthday at the Great Barrier Reef.

The journey to the future, I mean Queenstown, New Zealand: 28 hours 3 planes 2 - almost heart attack’s getting to our plane for Melbourne with 1 minute before the doors closed. 6 coffees to stay awake 2 bottles of wine when we arrived (what? we shared with Mandy and Johan...) Not a bad place to start Mandi and Johan flew through Sydney, we flew through Melbourne. Day 12 and 13: A walk in the rain forest and a return home

Day 12 and last full day in Cairns: We took the Skyrail gondola up to Kuranda, a pretty commercialized version of an old rain forest village.  The best part of the visit was their jungle tracks. We walked through the rain in a rain forest that has been here for 180 million years, older than the Amazon.  This was our view at lunch... The rain didn’t get us down, we continued our walk about through little rivers and waterfalls. Contemplating the universe... And hoping not to run into crocodiles... spoiler alert, we didn’t.  The gondola ride was a great birds eye way to see the lush rain forest. And waterfalls And view of cairns and the coast. We finished the day with a taste of several coastline restaurants and a mysterious full moon. It was an amazing last day in Cairns.  Day 13:  We set out for Melbourne and our time travel trip home  And Mandy and Johan started another adventure in Sydney.
